While Uruguay’s annual wine production is miniscule compared with a single large winery in neighbouring Argentina, no matter – its national Tannat grape has finally been given a chance to shine at tastings, courtesy of La Vinería de Colonia.

The recently opened wine store and tasting room is found in sleepy, historic Colonia del Sacramento on the eastern banks of the River Plate. Housed in a classic colonial red-brick building, La Vinería was formerly a home, a restaurant and a créperie. Now, it might just have found its true vocation.
