Three Super-Travelers on Their Favorite Off-Season Destinations

(Condé Nast Traveler) The late-summer grape harvest in Mendoza, Argentina, beautifully brings people together. Yet I find that when this mountainous wine country is blanketed in snow and free from the groups that come through for tastings and asado in summer, it has a special kind of magic. In June (the peak of winter in the Southern Hemisphere), several inches of snow can fall in the Uco Valley, home to bodegas (wineries) such as organic champion Domaine Bousquet. Visitors cram the area’s wine village of Gualtallary in warmer months—but in June, I love seeing the mendocinos come out to play and take back their mountains. They build snowmen, and even I get the urge to indulge my inner child and throw a few snowballs.
